Discover the healing power of New Zealand's native plants, sustainably harvested and carefully crafted to enhance your wellbeing

The Ancient Wisdom of Aotearoa

At Nutrakawa, we harness the healing power of New Zealand's unique native plants – treasures that have been used in rongoā Māori (traditional Māori medicine) for centuries.

Our carefully crafted formulations combine ancestral knowledge with modern science to create natural wellness solutions that are truly distinctive to our land. Each ingredient is respectfully harvested from New Zealand's pristine environments, where isolation has allowed these plants to develop powerful therapeutic properties found nowhere else on Earth.

We partner directly with local communities to ensure sustainable practices that honour the land and its traditions. When you choose Nutrakawa, you're not just purchasing a wellness product – you're connecting to the healing legacy of Aotearoa and supporting the preservation of both our natural taonga (treasures) and the traditional knowledge that brings them to life.

Meet Katerina - Healer, Rongoā Practitioner & Founder

My journey with New Zealand's healing plants began long before Nutrakawa was established. As a young girl in Northland, I learned from my grandmother who took me everywhere, planting seeds of traditional knowledge that would later bloom into my life's purpose.

In 2003, facing a serious health diagnosis, I was given 18 months to live. This challenging time led me to reconnect deeply with rongoā Māori - the traditional healing practices of Aotearoa. Through this reconnection, I discovered not only a path toward my own wellbeing but a calling to share these healing treasures with others. The kawakawa tonic I created initially for myself showed remarkable results for gut health and overall balance.

What began as personal healing evolved into Nutrakawa - born from tradition, refined through experience, and delivered with aroha. Every Nutrakawa product begins with me asking permission from the plants, harvesting with traditional protocols, and processing in absolute purity. I follow the principles that guided my own healing journey: Ask, Trust, Believe, Thanks.

When you choose Nutrakawa, you're not just selecting natural wellness products - you're connecting to generations of wisdom, the healing power of Aotearoa's native plants, and my personal commitment to sharing their gifts with the world.

- Katerina Scott (née Tipene), Founder

The Power of New Zealand's Native Plants

How we source our Ingredients

We selectively and sustainably gather our main plant ingredients from the native hills of Kaeo, behind the beautiful, and iconic Bay of Islands in the Far North Island of New Zealand.

KAWAKAWA (Macropiper excelsum)

Known as the pharmacy of the forest, Kawakawa has been revered by Māori for generations. Its distinctive heart-shaped leaves contain powerful anti-inflammatory compounds and natural analgesics that soothe skin irritations, ease digestion, and reduce pain.

Modern research has confirmed what traditional healers always knew – Kawakawa contains unique bioactive compounds including diayangambin and myristicin that provide natural relief without harsh chemicals.

Our sustainable harvesting focuses on leaves with the characteristic insect holes – traditionally believed to indicate higher potency of healing compounds.

KUMARAHOU (Pomaderris kumeraho)

Known as the "Gumdigger's Soap" and revered in rongoā Māori, Kumarahou is one of New Zealand's most treasured medicinal plants.

When the golden flowers of this native shrub bloom in spring, they signal the traditional time for harvesting its remarkable therapeutic properties. For generations, Māori healers have utilised Kumarahou's leaves and flowers to support respiratory health, cleanse the blood, and promote overall wellbeing.

The plant produces a natural soap-like lather when rubbed with water, which historically provided both cleansing and medicinal benefits.

TUPAKIHI / TUTU (Coriaria arborea)

One of New Zealand's most fascinating native plants, Tupakihi (also known as Tutu) is a powerful testament to traditional Māori plant knowledge. While the seeds and some parts of this plant require expert handling due to their potency, Māori healers have long understood how to harness its beneficial properties safely and effectively.

This distinctive shrub, with its cascading purple-black berries and vibrant green foliage, grows abundantly throughout New Zealand.

The selective use of specific plant parts demonstrates the sophisticated botanical knowledge developed through centuries of traditional practice.

What customer’s are saying about Nutrakawa

Cushla

I have been using Kawakawa tonic for a few months on and off (due to traveling overseas) and I really notice the difference. I have suffered with fibromyalgia for over 5 years now and my symptoms are much less when taking the tonic sometimes even non existent. I am sleeping better, reduced pain and more energy. I no longer need an afternoon nap which is big for me. I have so much more time and energy to get more done. Even my skin is looking brighter and healthier. I will definitely be continuing the tonic! Thanks Katerina for introducing it to me!”
